As an expert in your field, you are invited to submit your position on the reciprocal relationship between health literacy and social determinants of health, and how they influence health behaviours and outcomes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rationale<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given the training and support, health professionals are well-positioned to inform health policy. This assessment allows students to demonstrate their knowledge of the social determinants of health and health literacy and aims to develop their confidence to contribute to various health policies, priorities, and frameworks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This task provides a novel dimension to traditional health system policy development. To complete the task, you must demonstrate your knowledge of the role of social determinants of health and health literacy in the health of Australians by critically analysing existing evidence. You will then need to build on this by synthesising current evidence to communicate your position on the need to promote health literacy, and what that means for health policy and service delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Introduction (Jacqueline)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the many health disparities, employment status and hours worked have impacted the health gap most. Due to this, we will be touching on a small proportion of the issues within the Neighbourhood and built environment. Contributing to this disparity includes public travel to schools, work, shopping centres and health providers. Access to these via transport from neighbourhoods and built environments is necessary for communities to have the health care needed for themselves and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discuss the role of social determinants of health in causing health disparities. (Lyeon)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Define health literacy and then discuss its impact on health behaviours and outcomes (Jacqueline)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Health literacy is about how people understand information about health and health care, apply that information to their lives, use it to make decisions, and act on it. Health literacy is crucial because it shapes people&#8217;s health and the safety and quality of health care (2) With this, many aspects are considered:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What access do these communities have to healthcare, what are their cognitive abilities to understand what the healthcare system has to offer,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How can communities gain access to healthcare&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and the information to make informed decisions about their health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The built environment is a determinant of health due to its ability to affect health outcomes through activity levels, access to nutritious food and clean water, the houses we live in, where we work, contact with nature and the spaces we have for social interactions. (3)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Communities use these environments to create a healthier way of life. Without income, food, quality healthcare, transport, and education harm one\u2019s health. As seen above, this becomes apparent within rural communities, with roughly 60% of people having a 5?crease in life expectancy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is shown that People are more likely to walk for transport, recreation or exercise if they live in neighbourhoods that are perceived as safe, are within a walkable distance of destinations, have well-designed footpaths and safe pedestrian crossings, and higher residential densities (4) In rural areas where the population and resources are small their walkability areas must be greater then their personal or public transport areas. Walkability would be beneficial to the community\u2019s health and future health outcomes. Built environments have benefited from creating walkability areas ranging from no more than an hour of walk time to any public transport and have now, in the most recent budget, made public highly affordable for anyone needing to access any built environment, including health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has been shown that higher residential densities and street connectivity, mixed land uses and high-quality pedestrian infrastructure are all needed to achieve walkable cities. This would open up access to public transport, public open space, housing affordability, employment, and food environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This access to facilities may be the case for populated cities, but how do we reflect these practices in rural communities?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of these communities don\u2019t have access to schools, higher education, shopping centres, and health facilities, which creates a health disparity within the community. Lack of education about health, education and socioeconomic status hinders the communities\u2019 response to their health concerns. Utilising the knowledge of the Australian Health Minister in combination with the rural communities, the concerns about access to health, education and working facilities and the knowledge to understand and feel safe with their problems could be given clarity by people relevant to health disparities over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In all areas within the different communities, the matter is creating a cost-effective way\/ways to enhance these neighbourhoods and built environments. We all need access to health and the understanding of how to increase quality of life, and depending on where you live will determine the quality of access to these facilities.
