Case Scenario

Case Scenario 1 

You are a first-year student nurse working in a primary healthcare setting. Your clinical placement involves providing care to a diverse community with varying healthcare needs across the lifespan. You have been assigned to care for Michael, a 57-year-old Caucasian male who has recently been diagnosed with Heart Failure. Michael has a past medical history of smoking (he stopped 10 years ago) and heavy alcohol consumption (30+ units per week). His BMI is 35. Michael does not exercise often but he takes care of his grandchildren a few days per week and works part-time stacking shelves in a supermarket.

He used to enjoy walking, but he doesn’t have the energy to do this anymore. His diet consists of high-fat and high carbohydrate foods, and he likes sugary drinks.

Case Scenario 2

You are a first-year student midwife working in a primary healthcare setting. Your clinical placement involves providing care to a diverse community with varying healthcare needs across the lifespan. You have been assigned to care for Sarah Thompson, a 32-year-old woman who is currently 30 weeks pregnant. Sarah presents herself to the primary healthcare clinic for a routine prenatal check-up. She is a second-time mother with one previous uncomplicated vaginal delivery. Sarah has been receiving regular antenatal care and has just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Sarah has gained 20kgs in weight during this pregnancy and stopped smoking when she became aware of her pregnancy. She works part-time as an administration assistant at her local school.
