In groups of 3-4, students will produce and submit 8-10 PowerPoint slides which, using visual material (images, graphs, art, original creative video etc), illuminate a contemporary social issue relating to inequality. Groups will then outline an explanation and analysis of this using at least two sociological concepts and a historical overview of how this inequality emerged.
Some suggestions of contemporary social issues you might consider are a recent debate or event related to:
- level of unemployment benefits
- environmental issues
- same-sex marriage
- youth curfews
- older women and the growing number who are homeless
- exploitation of workers on temporary visas
Part A: Visual/PowerPoint presentation (group)
In the slideshow presentation, you need to include:
A title page that informs the audience of the social issue you have selected, your names,
Part B: Visual/PowerPoint Presentation Summary (individual)
To accompany the PowerPoint slides students are to submit an individual presentation report in the form of a word document no more than 1,200 words long. This complements the largely visual power point presentation you have created with your group. This will report on the content of the presentation.
Using text, appropriately define and apply the two sociological concepts featured in the PowerPoint slides to the social inequality issue featured in the PowerPoint slides. Your written outline should briefly describe the historical roots of the selected social equality issue and the social contexts within which it emerged.
