Gibbs Model Critical Reflection Framework Assignment

Assignment Task

Critical Reflection (using Gibbs Model):

You will critically reflect on an event using the Gibbs critical reflection framework. Gibbs offers a structure for examining experiences and given its cyclic nature, it is particularly useful for repeated experiences, allowing you to learn and plan from things that either went well or didn’t go well.

STAR Framework: You can use the STAR method to structure your answers during an interview. The STAR method helps you provide a concise and logical story—especially useful for responding to behavioural questions such as “Tell me about a time when…”.

Critical Reflection

This reflective assessment is to be undertaken in PebblePad and follows a logical progression designed to guide you through the process. Using an example from your previous clinical placement experience, write a narrative reflection on how you demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills within a clinical setting. Your reflection must be related to an experience as a nursing student. If this is your first year in this course (e.g., you have RPL and entered the course at this stage), you can reflect on a previous clinical experience from when you were a student in your previous undergraduate course. You will need to identify this in the reflection tab on PebblePad.

Your reflection must be a positive one that demonstrates how good communication is beneficial for patient care. Use the Gibbs Model for reflective writing to guide your reflection.

Your reflection must include a minimum of three appropriate references demonstrating your application of the evidence base to your learning experience.

STAR Framework

Using your clinical placement reflection as detailed in point 1, write a statement using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) framework to explain a real-life example of how you demonstrated effective written and verbal communication in a clinical setting. Your STAR statement should highlight the skills and abilities, knowledge, experience, qualifications, and work-related qualities needed to perform the role effectively. Ensure to refer to the RN standards of practice.
