Assignment Task
Project Management 1
Study Units Covered:
It is only when you use your own words that the markers can establish whether you have understood the concepts outlined in the study notes. The markers are then in a better position to offer you constructive feedback. Students are therefore required to provide their own interpretation of the questions and concepts. Simply rewriting from the study guide or a textbook will not result in any marks being awarded. Students are reminded that this is an individual effort and group submissions will be penalized.
Caselet / Scenario
A project can be defined as a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product or service. Burke (2021, Chapter 1, p.18)
For this assignment, you are required to select a project you would like to initiate or a project you are involved in that has recently been initiated. Your selected project needs to be:
- either a community-based project or a project on behalf of a company;
- be significant enough to require a project team to undertake; and
- meet the definition of a project as above.
Selecting an appropriate project is the most important step, and once you have selected a project you need to answer the questions below
Question 1
Develop a project charter for your selected project using the format outlined in Burke (2021, Chapter 7, pp.119-121), marks will be awarded for providing a project charter that is structured logically, clearly explains to the reader the reason you selected the project, outlines the need the project aims to address and provides other information as applicable to the project.
Question 2
Develop a work breakdown structure (WBS) for your selected project. Your project must include 5 – 10 work packages. Each work package needs to be broken down further. Depending on the complexity of the work package, they may only be broken down one level further, but some work packages need to be broken down two levels further. Your WBS also needs to be numbered correctly. Below your completed WBS Template diagram write one paragraph in conclusion explaining why you chose the specific WBS format, why you broke each work package down to the level of detail you did, and provide a key that explains the numbering and levels you used. Use the same or similar WBS Template, in Burke (2021, page 201), Figure 14.8 to structure the WBS packages you discussed in Question 1. Marks will be awarded for selecting an appropriate WBS structure that suits the type of project you chose. Marks will be awarded for a correctly numbered WBS and for breaking the project down to the appropriate level of detail, i.e. to a level that makes it easy to allocate tasks to resources and make management of the project effective.
Question 3
Draw a Gantt chart for your project. The Gantt chart needs to show the start and end date of the project and show the start and end date of each work package. Your Gantt chart needs to be realistic and based on your WBS. Marks will be awarded for a Gantt chart that corresponds to the WBS, described in Question 2, and includes all the work packages arranged in a logical order, numbered, and labeled correctly. See Burke (2021, Chapter 17).
