Assignment Task
You may choose between Question 1 or 2. A reminder that your response should be based on your readings of the course textbook and your own thinking. Please do not consult other sources in responding to these questions.
1. Systemic Racism
In May 2020, a protest swept across the United States, Canada, and elsewhere in the world, in reaction to the murder of George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, by the Minneapolis police during an arrest for using an allegedly counterfeit $20 bill. Protestors decried the incident as reflective of systemic racism that is embedded in many North American institutions, like the police. When first questioned about this, Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated that Canada doesn’t have the same “systemic, deep roots” of racism as the United States. He later backtracked to explain that, in fact, he does acknowledge racism in Ontario, but there was a difference between the two countries in that, in Canada, people for the most part get along. Is Ford correct?
For your discussion, please respond to the following:
- Explain the statement “Racism makes race matter”
- Using examples, distinguish between racism and systemic racism.
- How does racism become systemic? Give an example.
- What can an organization do to prevent racism from becoming part of how it operates?
OR
2. Sex and Gender
As the concept of gender has become more diverse in the West, shifting from a rigid male/female dichotomy to a more varied spectrum, we have increasingly opened the door for people to behave in non-traditional ways according to their gender identity and to less rigid gender scripts. As you consider the ways gender roles may be changing, answer the following questions:
- Give some examples where men assume more ‘traditional’ female gender roles and women assume ‘traditional’ male gender roles? What are the challenges that people in these roles face?
- Are these role variations common in your social circles?
- What aspects of culture do you think are contributing to more gender role variation and what aspects serve to solidify gender roles?
