Let’s remind ourselves of the Bygrave’s (1997) definition of an entrepreneur: an entrepreneur is someone who not only perceives an opportunity, but who also creates an organisation to pursue it (although we must not forget that entrepreneurial people can also be present in existing organizations.
1. In this reflective exercise, spend around 30–45 minutes online researching the different general definitions of ‘entrepreneurship’, ‘entrepreneurialism’ and ‘entrepreneur’. You should use search engines. Use this tutorial on internet research if you need help getting started.
2. Create a list of the commonalities between the words. Do you agree with these definitions? Do you think any elements are missing from these definitions?
3. Now see how many definitions you can find for sports entrepreneurs in addition to the ones I have already given you from Porter and Vamplew and Ratten. Note them down in your study journal and use them to consider how you would define a sports entrepreneur and why. What sets them apart from other types of entrepreneurs in your opinion?
