Assessment Overview: Holistic Practical Care Skills Reflection

This assessment is about showing that you can really use the holistic care skills you have learned when you are working in Early Learning and Care settings. You will do three care tasks, one from each of the categories A, B and C and then think about what you did using the ERA Reflective Cycle also known as the Jasper model.

You have to do this when you`re on your professional placement and your supervisor will check that you have done it during your meetings with them.

Learning Outcomes Assessed

This assessment covers the learning outcomes 1 to 5 from the unit Holistic Care of Children which`s for children from 0 to 6 years old with the code 5C21525.

Task Requirements

You need to choose one task from each of the columns A, B and C:

Column A you can choose one of the following:

  • Dealing with an accident or incident
  • Dealing with a child
  • Changing a nappy
  • Helping a child to sleep or rest safely

Column B you can choose one of the following:

  • Feeding babies
  • Feeding toddlers
  • Feeding children
  • Bottle feeding, including getting everything ready and clean

Column C you can choose one of the following:

  • Helping a child to use the toilet or potty
  • Keeping everything including the environment, equipment, toys and your hands
  • Doing a fire drill
  • Dropping off or collecting children

Reflection Requirements using the ERA Reflective Cycle, which is also called the Jasper model

For each of the three tasks you choose you need to think about what you did and write it down in an order:

  1. Getting Ready
    Say how you got ready for the task, including what you planned what you. How ready you were in the setting.

  2. Talking to People
    Explain how you talked to the children the staff and anyone else who was involved in the task.

  3. Keeping Everyone Safe
    Talk about how you made sure everyone was safe before during and after the task and say what policies, procedures and rules you followed.

  4. Using What You Know
    Explain how what you have learned helped you do the task.

  5. Doing the Task
    Say how you did the task, step by step.

  6. Thinking About What Happened (ERA Cycle)

You need to include:

  • What Happened: say what happened when you did the task
  • Why It Happened: say why you think it happened that way and how you felt
  • What You Would Do Time: say what you would do differently next time to make it better

Submission Format

You can present your work in one of these ways:

  • A written report
  • An essay
  • An oral presentation
  • A video presentation

If you write it it should be 1200 to 1500 words with about 400 to 500 words for each task. If you do a presentation it should be 8 to 12 minutes long.
