Respond to the Main Question.

Respond to the Two Responses.

Main Question: For this discussion, consider what you think visual art will be like 200 years from now.

How will it be experienced?

What will it look like?

What will be the predominant subject matter and themes?

Looking again at the section “What Do Artists Do?” in Chapter 1 of the text, which task/s will artists be mostly involved in?

Will there be newer, different tasks?

How will it reflect the values of the future society?

Response 1: Art reflects the values, interests, and knowledge of the society from which it originates.

Visual art is a visual object or experience consciously created through an expression of skill or imagination.

In essence, if you can imagine it, you can turn it into art.

But what will visual art look like 200 years from now?

This question is nearly impossible to answer because art is so diverse.

There is many different subject matters and themes, many different techniques, and many different mediums from which an artist can choose from.

There is no way to know what might happen in the next 200 years, or what an artist may experience in 200 years.

We could have a race war or choose to overthrow the government, in which an artist chooses to create artwork to portray history.

There may be new things discovered in space or at the bottom of the ocean that an artist may choose to document.

Humans may have new ideas about other worlds, or divine beings, that they may wish to illustrate.

I do believe that, with the advancement of technology, that will have a huge influence on art, especially as a way of viewing and experiencing art.

In 200 years, art may be viewed through augmented reality and virtual reality technology.

Art may be made of 3D holograms or immersive experiences involving avatars.

So, what do artists do? Artists create places for some human purpose.

They create extraordinary versions of ordinary objects.

They record and commemorate. They give tangible form to the unknown. They give tangible form to feelings and ideas.

And they refresh our vision and help us see the world in new ways. I believe that all of these tasks will still be upheld in 200 years, especially that of recording and commemorating, giving tangible form to the unknown, and refreshing our vision.

I feel that in 200 years, our world will need visual art in terms of seeing the world in new ways.

I also hope that visual art will reflect the values of the future society in a positive and impactful way.

Who knows what will be of our world in 200 years, but I hope that it is a kind and caring place.

Response 2: I think visual art will be similar to how we experience it now, over hundreds of years humanity has evolved different ways of creating art, going from cave paintings to sculptures then painting and more recently, digital art.

Although there have been different ways of creating art most people still adore the detail and flow a good piece of art brings and how it portrays the subject matter with the types of colors used.

A muted color palette often is seen in scenes of war and battles while a more vibrant color pattern is often used when displaying scenes of nature and joyfulness in the characters.

Many artists admire the eccentric pieces done by Van Gogh and the amazingly detailed work done by Michelangelo, although art has evolved some of the best works displayed in museums were created by historic artists.

I think people will continue to go to museums to view the work created by great artists because experiencing art in real life is a whole different feeling than any other way of viewing it.

Seeing all the little brush strokes used to create one scene that brings your eye through the whole piece is something that a lot of people could stand and observe for hours, looking over every inch of the work.

I think in the far future a lot of artists will still be involved in societal problems as they were hundreds of years ago and still today.

Society will never be perfect for anyone and many artists portray this in their work, there will always be problems that need to be addressed and these problems are relatable to the viewer of the work.

A lot of artists choose to show how they feel about the world’s problems through art, it’s a creative way to go about working through many issues we face while also being able to connect with everyone from different viewpoints.

I think many artists will depict the weight society puts on people and how stressful everyday life can be because many people resonate with this type of work.

There will be technological advances that allow us to show art in different ways but I still think there will always be amazing, original art that people will flock to see.

Paintings and very time consuming art work amazes people and whether it’s 200 years from now or 1000, people will always want to view portraits and sculptures, especially since by then many of them will probably be fossils.
