ASB 300 Auburn University Main Campus Food Blog Analysis Worksheet
Purpose:
In this assignment, you are being asked to analyze two food blogs, looking at how they present food and what types of ties they make between food and other elements of life and culture.
Skills and Knowledge:
Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:
Demonstrate an awareness of the different ways in which food blogs are organized and designed to appeal to audiences.
Apply your knowledge of the relationships between food and identity to an analysis of food blogs
Task:
In this assignment, you need to select two food blogs to analyze. By food blog, I mean a blog where at least 75% of the posts are focused on sharing recipes (by this I do not mean that 70% of a singular post should be devoted to a recipe but that 75% of the overall posts need to share a recipe). There are over 20,000 food blogs on the internet so you have a wide variety to choose from. You are free to choose any food blogs you like as long as the food blog is active (i.e. posts are still regularly appearing). Other food media websites such as food magazine websites (e.g. Bon Appetit) or food TV networks (e.g. Food Network), are not appropriate for this analysis. Additionally, you cannot select the food blogs used in the examples.
- In your analysis, which you need to complete in the required template, you will describe each food blog and the role of the author, hypothesize the intended audience, and analyze the use of language and visuals in the blog. There is a separate section in the template for this individual analysis of each blog. You will then need to compare and contrast the two blogs and link your analysis to at least two course themes. One of these course themes needs to be related to Modules 4 and 5 and food and identity (national identity, race/ethnicity, religion, gender, or social class). The second course theme could come from Modules 4 and 5 or from earlier modules (e.g. diets and health claims, obesity stigma, etc.). Both of the ties to course themes needs to be supported by citing at least one course source (lectures, readings, videos, or podcasts) and/or outside academic, peer-reviewed articles (for a total of two course sources and/or peer-reviewed sources cited).
