Historians make careful distinctions about system of slavery throughout the human past, and have noted that, while there have been many “societies with slaves” (in which slavery existed, but it was not the central element of society), there are relatively few examples of “slave societies” (where slavery is the foundational stone of a state’s society, economy, and politics). The American South prior to the Civil War was one of those most vile slave societies.
