  • Review the Final Report of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. The report is available at
    • Links to an external site.Consider how the recommendations of the 21st Century Policing Task Force could impact the trust between the police and community.
  • Select any one of the six pillars addressed in the task force report. In no less than 1,250 and no more than 1,500 words, write a paper, in your own words, summarizing the following:
    • The general scope of the pillar you selected and why you believe the pillar was identified as an area to improve the police-community relationship.
    • Two examples of specific activities or initiatives police organizations should do to implement the recommendations of the pillar you selected, and why those examples would be useful.
    • What recommendation of the report you believe YOU would be good at helping to implement, and why you feel you would be good at it.

Please follow college-level writing rules (APA Format), including a cover page, reference page, double spacing, etc. Submit your written summary to the assignment in Canvas by 6pm, May 12th.

    3. During our online virtual Zoom class on May 12th or 19th (group A or B, respectively), you will also deliver a 3 to 5-minute verbal summary (with your video cam activated), of what you learned about the pillar you selected. Your verbal summary should cover:

    • your understanding and interpretation of the scope of the pillar and why you believe it was identified as an area to improve the police-community relationship, and
    • a specific recommendation under the pillar you selected that you believe YOU would be good at helping to implement, and WHY you feel you would be good at it.

NOTE: The verbal summary IS NOT an invitation for you to simply READ your written summary verbatim. It is a brief PRESENTATION, during which you are expected to verbalize your thoughts, not recite a narrative you are reading.

You are certainly welcome to use notes to help keep you on track, but I will be looking to see that you are speaking to your classmates and not just reading. This is why your camera must be activated in Zoom, since it will at least mimic presenting in front of the class in person.
