Unit 05 Renewable Energy Systems - Higher National Certificate/Diploma in Engineering

Learning Outcome 1: Explore potential renewable energy resources, including current storage and generation technologies

Learning Outcome 2: Determine the optimum combination and efficiencies of renewable energy technologies for a particular location

Learning Outcome 3 :Conduct a cost-benefit analysis between renewable and conventional energy sources to determine the most viable option

Learning Outcome 4: Explain socio-economic, legislative and environmental factors involved in the consideration and selection of other approaches to renewable energy resources and technologies

Assignment Brief

Scenario:

Modern society is energy hungry. Our use of technology demands a huge supply of energy and we have devised many ways to supply this energy. There is a limited supply of fossil fuels and we will eventually run out of them. A lot of research is being undertaken to develop sustainable sources of energy, the renewables such as Hydroelectric, solar, wind and tidal power. One of the major energy providers is planning to diversify the production of renewable energy resources. You are employed as an engineering trainee to explore the pros and cons of introducing potential renewable energy resources. Your employer has set the following tasks for you to complete in order to assess your suitability for the job.

Task 1

(a) Create a schematic diagram that illustrates how the following energy sources are obtained and transformed. These diagrams should be labelled.

i. Solar energy

ii. Wind Energy

iii. Hydro power and

iv. Tidal Energy

(b) Explore the rates of adoption of two of the above energy resources. Justify recommendations for the adoption of the chosen renewable energy resources.

Task 2

(a) Choose two renewable energy systems from Task 1 and describe how these systems could be connected with local systems.
(b) Choose a remote area and discuss how renewable energy systems will bring benefit to the people living in the area.
(c) Choose a location in United Kingdom and list the efficiencies of a variety of combinations of renewable energy technologies for the chosen location.
