Assignment Aim

The aim of this assignment is to enable the student to identify their learning needs as they relate to the ‘NMBI domains of competence’ (2016) by reflecting on their personal and professional development on the program to date.

Assignment Guidelines

Through a process of reflective analysis, the student should explore how their experiences during the educational journey to date have contributed to their growth and development as a nurse or midwife.

For Nursing students

You are required to reflect on your growth and personal and professional development

in relation to two sub-competency from Nursing Competence Domain 6 as follows:-

  1. Professional Values and Conduct of the Nurse Competences
  2.  Nursing Practice and Clinical Decision-Making Competences
  3. Knowledge and Cognitive Competences
  4.  Communication and Interpersonal Competencies
  5. Management and Team Competences
  6. Leadership Potential and Professional Scholarship Competences

All students are required to conduct a learning needs assessment and develop a

personal learning plan with specific learning outcomes to assist them in their growth.

Completing The Assignment

Completion of the assignment will be executed in 3 sections as follows:

Section A (Completion of learning needs assessment)

During your Michaelmas clinical practice placement, you will be required to complete all domains/principles within the document titled ‘Learning Needs Assessment Tool for Appendices. Please note there is one of these specific to midwifery and one specific to nursing (all disciplines). It is important that this is completed whilst on clinical placement to facilitate development/completion of the reflective assignment during the taught component of the module. This section should be submitted as an appendix.

Section B (Reflective Assignment 3000 words)

The assignment specifically should:

  • Articulate your current level of competence.
  • Be reflective and analytical in nature and refer to your previous practice, experiences, and theory. Your reflection should demonstrate your journey towards competence to date and use a reflective framework.
  • Draw on relevant concepts and theories learned in the module and on the course. Knowledge relating to the module content and relevant literature should be evident.
  • Demonstrate identification of the learning necessary for you to become competent in the two sub-competencies/principles and discuss the evidence base for becoming competent in the two sub-competencies/principles.
  • Provide a discussion of your learning plan.
  • Use generic terms when referring to other professionals, patients/clients, and practice locations. (e.g., Doctor X, nurse A, speech therapist, primary health care centre, community residencial, home). In the interest of confidentiality use pseudonyms for service users and do not identify care facilities by name.
  • Demonstrate professional and ethical integrity, and that you have the capacity to act within your scope of practice. A fail grade may be applied where a student discloses their engagement in unsafe/negligent/unethical practice or in an incidence of observing unsafe practice whereby reporting of the event and follow-up has not occurred.
  • Provide a minimum of 10 references, 5 per sub-competency/principle to supportyour discussion.

Nursing students: Using a reflective framework, reflect on each sub-competency from Domain 6.

Section C (Development of a Learning Plan)

You are required to develop a learning plan based on your sub-competency from Domain 6. This section should also be submitted as an appendix.
