Essays are to be six to eight typed, double-spaced pages (1500 words) with a complete bibliography and discography at the end.In-text citations or footnotes should be included every 2-3 sentences for any paraphrased material, and citations are mandatory after direct quotations.Long quotations must be indented and single-spaced with a citation at the end.You will receive 0 on your essay if citations are not included.

Pick a Western Art Music composer from      the list below.Start with a brief      introduction, providing the title of the piece, year, and composer.Briefly discuss his or her biography and      musical career.Give an overview of      the compositional style the composer developed.Find a recording of one of the      composer’s pieces.Choose a      2-minute clip of the piece and break it down into shorter sections (20-30      seconds), and analyze using the method from class.The analysis may be in chart or      paragraph format.Discuss the time, melody, instruments, tonality,      texture, and dynamics that you hear using terms from class.Include an interpretation section      for the entire clip.Summarize the      main points of the essay with a brief conclusion.The bibliography and separate      discography (with the legitimate recording(s) you listened to) should be      included at the end of the essay.

Youtube may be used in addition to a legitimate recording.Recordings through the Ryerson library website or any recordings that require payment (e.g., Itunes, Google Play, & Spotify) are acceptable.Also, some of you may want to use CDs (if you have access).

Citation Requirements

Students are expected to use reference materials through the library website (books, journals, encyclopedias, recordings).You may use more than one article or entry from a peer-reviewed source to count towards your four peer-reviewed sources (such as two entries from the Grove Dictionary of Music).Reliable online sources, such as the official website for an artist, may be consulted for additional information.Official biographies or non peer-reviewed magazine articles or books on popular music in general are also acceptable secondary sources.Authors must be cited in all websites used, and proper bibliographic format used. Use of Wikipedia is prohibited. Students should use a minimum of four peer-reviewed written sources in addition to a legitimate recording, and must cite all directly or indirectly quoted and paraphrased material, including the professor’s lectures.The textbook is an excellent source of information, and may be used in addition to the four peer-reviewed sources.

Essays with citations, bibliographies, and discographies that do not meet the proper formats for Chicago Manual of Style, APA or MLA will lose 10%.Bibliographies and discographies must be single-spaced, with second and subsequent lines of each entry indented and all punctuation in the correct place.Either author-date format or footnotes may be used for in-text citations.You may put your bibliography and discography on the same page.

Essays that do not use the minimum four peer-reviewed sources will lose 5% per missing source.

It is possible to lose a total of 30% of the essay grade with a combination of no peer-reviewed sources and an incorrectly formatted bibliography or citations.Please take care in all of your citation practices.
