Unit 1 Individual Project - Higher National in Construction and the Built Environment

Assignment - Topic: Safeguarding health & safety throughout construction projects

It`s important to realise that the above are the outcomes of a project which you are required to carry out. Assessment of this Unit is based as much upon how you carry out the project, as the outcomes indicated above. Therefore, in addition to the above you are required to submit the following:

• A Project Plan, undertaken at the start of the assignment which will provide a format for you to record your aims and goals for the assignment and identify any specific resources, timelines, and stages required for the project.
• A Log Book, which will offer a means to evidence the project development process and ongoing reflection. It should provide evidence that you have thought about the direction of your project, what challenges you may have encountered and steps you took to address them.
• A Performance Review, completed at the end of the project and will allow you to record the reflection and evaluation of your own learning through the project and to consider your individual performance.

N.B. The "Project" you are managing is the academic study process - not a physical build project! Therefore your project plan needs to reflect your plan for study, research, data analysis, drafts, submissions etc (it is not a construction phase plan!). It is important that you review the assessment criteria below which are the criteria by which you will be assessed in this unit so that your evidence is submitted with these in mind.

Learning Outcome 1: Formulate a project that will provide a solution to an identified problem.

Learning Outcome 2: Manage a project within agreed timescales and specification, documenting the process throughout.

Learning Outcome 3: Evaluate potential project management solutions

Learning Outcome 4: Produce a project report and deliver a presentation of the final project outcomes.

Assignment Brief

You have recently gained employment as an Assistant Project Manager for a large general contracting firm. As part of the company`s drive to provide safer practices on site, they are seeking ways to review and improve safety in the projects that they undertake. Whilst they do have an excellent safety record, they do not wish to rest on their laurels and are determined to involve their site operations staff in helping to develop a new safety manual. They therefore are preparing to review, rewrite and republish their company manual entitled "Safeguarding health & safety throughout construction projects"

You have been tasked with undertaking a project and submitting a written report to the company board, which will inform the content of the above manual and contains the following;

II. summarises data gathered through secondary research on accidents and near misses in the UK Construction industry for a given year. (secondary research)

III. gathers real data on actual accidents and near misses from a major construction project for a twelve month period. (primary research)

IV. provides an analysis of a questionnaire to construction site staff involved in a major construction project which establishes their level of awareness of their responsibilities to H & S on site and relates the findings to the two previous bullet points. (primary research)
You are also tasked with providing a presentation on the following:
• how project objectives and learning outcomes have been met.
• how you have explored research material relevant to the project.
• how you have developed and formulated your outcomes.
• how project outcomes provide evidence of achieving the learning outcomes.
• how you have managed and documented your process.
• what you have learned in undertaking the project.
