PART 1

System Modeling

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, read Chapter 5: System Modeling. System modeling allows software engineers to first visualize a system as it is (or how it should be), which then allows them to specify the structure or behavior of a system.

For this discussion, you will be focusing on fundamental system modeling and Unified Modeling Language (UML).

In your initial post, describe the fundamental system modeling of context, interaction, structure, and behavioral and three to five UML diagram types.

Using the Mentcare system described in Chapter 5, explain the context model and UML activity diagrams for the Mentcare system.

Describe how case modeling and sequence diagrams transfer data from “Medical Receptionist” to “Patient Records System.”

Using the Mentcare system, show its UML classes and associations.

Use at least one Scholarly, Peer Reviewed, or Other Credible Sources from the University of Arizona Global Campus Library or elsewhere to help formulate your initial discussion post.

Cite your source in APA format as outlined by the APA Essay Checklist for Students.

Your initial post must be a minimum of 300 words.

Part 2

Architectural Design

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, read Chapter 6: Architectural Design.

Once software requirements have been identified, it should be transformed into an architectural design that clearly identifies all of its components.

Architectural design is an important element of software engineering, as it allows software engineers to establish a framework prior to developing a computer system.

In your initial post, explain the architectural patterns—layered, client-server, and application architecture. Describe the Model-View-Controller (MVC) and provide an example of a web application using the MVC pattern.

Using the iLearn digital learning system in the text, explain a generic layered architecture and a client-server architecture for an online film library application.

Use at least one Scholarly, Peer Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources source from the University of Arizona Global Campus Library or elsewhere to help formulate your initial discussion post.

Cite your source in APA format as outlined by the APA Essay Checklist for Students. Your initial post must be a minimum of 300 words.

Part 3

Prior to beginning work on this interactive assignment, read Chapter 5: Contextual Models and Chapter 6: Architectural Design in the course text. It is also recommended that you begin reviewing Chapter 5 exercises 5.2 and 5.5 and Chapter 6 exercises 6.1 and 6.3, as these will be your homework assignment due later in the week.

In this week’s interactive assignment, you will add to your concept map that you created in Week 2 and further illustrate and make connections among the concepts of software development and requirements.

This week’s section of the concept map is focused on System Modeling and Architectural Design.

Illustrate the essential perspectives of context, interaction, structure, and behavior modeling.

Be sure to label each component, and then

  • Describe the differences between applying each model, using a real-life example.
  • Describe system architecture from different perspectives of software components.
  • Describe how architectural patterns are used to present, share, and reuse knowledge about software systems.
  • Describe the model-view-controller (MVC) pattern components as examples used in Layered and Client-Server architecture.

In addition to your concept map, you will write a paper in which you

  • Describe these five Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams and provide example scenarios for utilizing each diagram.
    • Activity
    • Use Case
    • Sequence
    • Class
    • State
  • Explain the two types of behavioral modeling: data-driven modeling and event-driven modeling (state diagram) providing examples showing the internal and external interactions for each.
  • Describe generic models of application systems to include transaction processing (using an ATM as an example) and language processing system, for changing one language into an alternative presentation of that language.
