Building on the themes covered in class, your final project will be a 2,500–3,000 word paper (10–12 double-spaced pages) responding to the following prompt: How do sound and sonic practices affect some aspect of society, law, economy, identity and/or cultural production?

You will choose a particular issue to research in consultation with the professor. For example, you might choose to study the history or development of a genre of music from the perspective of music technology, or you might study how a style of voicing relates to gendered or racialized performance, or you could examine how sound and noise are used tactically in protests. Whatever your precise topic may be, it should be one that you are passionate enough about to want to spend several weeks researching the issue.

Your paper should cite and apply concepts from the syllabus readings, but you will also have to do original research on your topic of choice, including references to academic texts on the subject that are not on the syllabus.

  • Cite and/or reference at least three sources from the syllabus
  • Cite and/or reference at least three sources not on the syllabus (Google Scholar is a great resource for this:)

My topic is how Midi (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) has impacted and changed Hip Hop/ Rap and R&B music.

Sources from syllabus that must be used:

Then you can select three other sources of your choice (scholarly articles are ideal)
