UNIT 4 Managing a Professional Engineering Project - Pearson Higher Nationals in Engineering

Learning Outcome 1: Formulate and plan a project that will provide a solution to an identified engineering problem.

Learning Outcome 2: Conduct planned project activities to generate outcomes which provide a solution to the identified engineering problem.

Learning Outcome 3: Produce a project report analysing the outcomes of each of the project processes and stages.

Learning Outcome 4: Present the project report drawing conclusions on the outcome of project.

Assignment Brief

You are to propose a topic of interest, under the theme of sustainability. This topic must then be researched, and you shall produce:
1. Proposal
2. Report
3. Presentation

Assignment 1: Proposal

a) Select an appropriate engineering-based project, giving reasons for the selection (P1).

Create a project plan for the engineering project (P2). Undertake a feasibility study to justify project selection (M1). Illustrate the effect of legislation and ethics in developing the project plan (D1). Student should follow Proposal Brief template to develop first draft of proposal. After selecting a suitable realistic engineering-based problem, the student should define the crucial considerations for the project i.e. tasks, milestones, schedule, key performance indicators which are all components of a project management plan. Initial secondary research is essential to identify the nature of the problem. An outline of a feasibility study should be prepared to identify constraints and produce an outline specification.

Develop an outline project brief and design specification for the potential solution. Identify and show effects of legislation and ethics in decision making in developing the project plan.

Assignment 2: Report

b) Conduct project activities, recording progress against original project plan (P3). Explore alternative methods to monitor and meet project milestones, justify selection of chosen method(s) (M2). Critically evaluate the success of the project plan making recommendations for improvements (using a reflective log) (D2). Student should track

planned progress versus actual progress and adapt where necessary. Student must execute project as planned and evaluate own behaviours with respect to ethics, health and safety and professional standards. Students must discuss local (BOETT) and UK (ICE or other) code of ethics and other pertinent laws or legal regulations that govern the engineering profession. Student shall compare local and UK ethical standards and patterns of behaviour.

c) Produce a project report covering each stage of the project and analyzing project outcomes (P4). Use appropriate critical analysis and evaluation techniques to analyze project findings (M3). Critically analyze the project outcomes making recommendations for further development (D3). Student must demonstrate written reporting skills to effectively communicate the work that has been conducted. Critical analysis and evaluation techniques shall be judged in comparing primary data obtained (the work you did on your problem) to secondary data found on similar problems. Make statements on success of project plan and own behaviours and performance and make recommendations for further development.
