Purpose of this assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to show that you know the effect of soil type and other factors on the selection of earth moving equipment. You also need to demonstrate that you understand how to specify productive safe deep excavations.

Scenario

A large site near Delta City has been bought by a consortium of building and civil engineering companies to develop as a mixed use development comprising of low rise residential houses, medium/high rise residential buildings and a shopping precinct. The site will be connected to the city centre and motorway network by widening old roads and constructing new roads that will involve the construction of embankments, cuttings and culverts.

You have been asked by the client to prepare report on the possible equipment needed for the earthworks, possible techniques for construction of excavations and the temporary works that may be constructed. The client is a fund manager who has little experience of construction.

Part 1

The roads connecting the site to the motorway network will pass through undulating terrain necessitating the construction of embankments and cuttings.

Explain the use of earthmoving equipment that could be used for the construction of the embankments and cuttings. You need to explain at least 5 types of equipment and detail what they would be used for. At least one needs to be used for bulk earthworks excavation and at least one for more detailed grading of the levels. Your explanation needs to include pictures and explain when the equipment would not be suitable.

Part 2
Trenches and large excavations need to be made for the construction of foundations and external works.
Describe and discuss the appropriate techniques that will ensure the quality of the construction work in trenches and the safety of the personnel undertaking the construction activities. You may wish to refer to advice from the Health and Safety Executive. You need to include when inspections should take place and precautions that need to be in place to protect personnel.
