The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) has established standards for students, teachers, administrators, technology coaches, and computer science educators. I know you are becoming familiar with the Georgia standards for Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Math, etc. But have you thought about technology standards for your setting? Georgia’s state department has adopted the ISTE standards for students as part of its academic standards. What does that mean for you? Is it something you are conscious of when making lesson plans?
This learning activity will have you become more familiar with the ISTE technology standards and academic indicators for students. Using the NETS Standards you will list and describe how you can meet two (2) of the Seven Foundation Standards identified by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) for your grade level. These indicators will give you an idea of the type(s) of activities you can develop for your students. You must include at least 2 descriptions of activities you would use to meet two different NETS Foundational Standards.
It is also important to think about the timing of this activity. Is this activity being done at the beginning of a unit or lesson as an introduction to the standard? Is it a practice lesson to reinforce the skills needed to meet the standard? Is it a culminating activity to show mastery of the standard? Not only does this influence the type of technology being used, but it can also impact the type of assessment being used at this level of the lesson. A beginning or introductory lesson might just be a participation or teacher observation for an informal assessment. The culminating use of the activity might lend itself to a rubric or even a very formal test.
You will use the NETS Project template to record your information. When you have completed the project please submit the document as an attachment in the NETS Project Assignment.
Technology Foundation Standards for Students
These are the Seven Foundation Standards that you will find described more in depth in the ISTE Student Standards. You will also find indicators of student achievement in the Student Standards
Empowered Learner
Digital Citizen
Knowledge Constructor
Innovative Designer
Computational Thinker
Creative Communicator
Global Collaborator
These Foundation Standards are written in broad terms but as educators, we can see ways to put this information in terms of what your students, clients, or public can achieve. While it would be developmentally inappropriate to expect kindergarten students to do independent research on the internet, we can see ways to make this a whole group activity led by the teacher. On the other hand, we would expect students to research more independently as they grow and develop academically.
Once you have the opportunity to look at the 7 Foundational Standards you can dig a little deeper to see the Academic lessons, activities, projects, etc. for ways to meet the standard. Look at the far right of each section of the standards and you will see a + sign. When you click on the + it will open the section and you will see those academic ways to meet the standards (Academic Indicators).
An example of a student academic indicator for Digital Citizen: You can locate the indicators by clicking on the plus sign (+) at the end of the row showing the Foundational Standard.
Students demonstrate an understanding of and respect for the rights and obligations of using and sharing intellectual property.
Therefore, for Part I of your assignment you will create and thoroughly describe two activities that are appropriate for the grade level/subject level of your students or clients. If you are working with adults, you can think in terms of high school students.
Part II of this assignment will have you explore the ISTE website. You will see some of the many facets of the site.
When you have completed the main sections for this assignment you will complete a Reflective Practice section:
After you have completed this assignment, please answer these three questions.
How can you use this type of assignment help you as you plan for your own classroom or clinic setting?
Explain how the use of this type of assignment can benefit the students in your educational setting?
How does this assignment help your professional growth and development?
